Use upload speed, the amount of data actually sent and the time available. A first backup may need much longer than later updates. The download and upload calculator handles either direction; it does not inspect your files.
Compare the first copy with the daily change
These examples assume decimal GB and constant effective throughput. They are not performance claims for a cloud provider.

At 20 Mbps, the first copy cannot fit in an eight-hour window. The 5 GB change can fit mathematically, with time left for other work. Whether your software uploads only changed data depends on its behaviour and configuration; verify its own documentation and transfer report.
Leave room for more than raw transfer
Reading files, encryption, checks, retries and cloud-side processing can add time. A transfer estimate is not proof that a recoverable backup exists. Use your backup application's completion and verification reports, and test recovery according to its instructions.
If the upload shares the connection with calls or other devices, model the part available to the backup. For example, 50% of 20 Mbps gives 10 Mbps; sending 5 GB then takes about 1 h 7 min. Leave the calculator at 100% if the entered speed already measures actual backup throughput, so losses are not counted twice.

The PC running-cost tool can compare the power cost of the schedule. Check data allowance separately if your plan counts uploads. Do not assume uploads are unmetered or that a higher download tier includes faster upload.
